The best cleanup sequence starts before the first cabinet or floor section comes out. Pick a staging area and preserve one reliable path to it.

Choose the staging zone

Use a place that is reachable from the work area and the eventual truck position. Keep sidewalks, fire access, neighbors’ property and shared driveways clear.

Separate bulky pieces first

Cabinets, doors, counters and long trim define the space the load will need. Stack stable pieces without trapping small debris underneath.

Contain small debris

Bag or bin sweepings, hardware and short sharp pieces. Do not mix chemicals, paint, batteries, lamps or unknown material into the construction pile.

Schedule around the build

Plan pickup after a meaningful tear-out phase and before new material crowds the access route. Tell the hauler about active trades and delivery windows.

Where the rules come from

Kern County Public Works publishes material-specific acceptance criteria for construction and demolition waste, and CalRecycle advises checking local facilities before taking material. Those sources support preparation decisions; they do not confirm what a private hauler will accept.
