Roofing debris should reach the ground in a controlled staging area, not scatter across the driveway, landscaping or street.

Start with a contained landing area

Use durable tarps or containers in a location that does not block emergency access or place weight on a fragile surface.

Control nails as the work moves

Use containers for removed fasteners and inspect the ground regularly. A magnetic sweep can support cleanup, but visual inspection still matters.

Keep roofing types identifiable

Tell the pickup provider whether the load contains asphalt shingles, tile, metal, felt, flashing or other roofing material. Suspect asbestos-containing products require qualified assessment.

Confirm weight and access

Share the roof size or estimated tear-off quantity, number of layers, pile location and available trailer approach. Do not promise truck access across landscaping or weak pavement.

Pickup-readiness checklist

  • Ground staging is contained
  • Fasteners are collected
  • Roofing types are listed
  • Driveway protection considered
  • Suspect material isolated

Where the rules come from

Kern County Public Works publishes material-specific acceptance criteria for construction and demolition waste, and CalRecycle advises checking local facilities before taking material. Those sources support preparation decisions; they do not confirm what a private hauler will accept.
